Salaries in France: How to Attract and Retain Top Talent

The average salary in France reflects the strength of its developed economy, but it is also characterised by a relatively high tax and social contribution burden.

As of 1 January 2026, the minimum monthly wage (SMIC) in France is €1,823.03 gross, which corresponds to approximately €1,443 net for a full-time employee.

This places France among the EU countries with a minimum wage above €1,800, although it still trails the top-paying countries.

The highest minimum wages in the EU (gross monthly, 2025–2026 estimates):

  • Luxembourg — approx. €2,638–2,704
  • Ireland — approx. €2,282
  • Netherlands — approx. €2,193–2,246
  • Germany — approx. €2,161
  • Belgium — approx. €2,070–2,112
  • France — €1,823 (from 2026)

According to INSEE, the average monthly salary in the private sector is around €3,602 gross, or about €2,733 net in full-time equivalent terms.

As a result, average gross salaries in France are lower than in Germany or the Netherlands, but remain close to Belgian levels. Net salaries, however, are more strongly affected by taxes and social contributions, which in France can reach 45–50% in total. This explains why the share of take-home pay relative to gross income is comparatively lower.
